Respiration is a metabolic process in which living cells of an organism obtain energy (ATP) by inhaling oxygen and exhaling carbon dioxide as a result of the oxidation of complex organic compounds.

External and cellular respiratory processes comprise the three types of respiration. External respiration is the process of breathing. Gases are inhaled and exhaled. Blood and body cells exchange gases during internal respiration.

The respiratory system has many functions. It does more than just help you inhale and exhale; it also:

Types of Respiratory System

Aerobic respiration occurs in the presence of oxygen. Almost all plants and higher animals, such as humans, mammals, and birds, use this type of respiration.

Anaerobic respiration is a type of cellular respiration that occurs without oxygen and is present in all lower species, including bacteria and yeast.

A wide range of conditions can affect respiratory system organs and tissues. Airborne irritants, such as viruses or bacteria, caused some infections. Others result from illness or aging.

Inflammation (swelling, irritation, and pain) and other conditions that can affect the respiratory system include the following:

Blood disorders are not particularly related to heart disease but damages the respiratory system. Respiratory and blood disorders are influenced mainly by the type of lifestyle one is indulging in.
