Not sure what IB Mathematics course you should take? These four courses may seem intimidating at first glance, but understanding which kind of student each course caters to can clear up any confusion. The last thing you want to do is end up in a class that you aren’t prepared to take. Whether you are looking at standard level or higher level IB Maths – you can rest assured you will choose the right course for you.

Applications & Interpretations SL &HL

The Applications & Interpretations SL (Standard Level) class is a perfect choice for students who do not plan to pursue any math-based courses after high school. Students who take this class do not have to have strong mathematics skills to pass.

The Applications & Interpretations HL (Higher Level) class was created for those students who are good at math and enjoy the subject. Like the SL course, the HL course load is for those who do not plan on continuing with mathematics after high school.

This SL course consists of 150 hours of course time and an assessment that consists of two papers and an IA. The SL course consists of:

Number & Algebra 16 hours
Functions 31 hours
Geometry & Trigonometry 18 hours
Statistics & Probability 36 hours
Calculus 19 hours
Took Kit & Exploration 30 hours

This HL course consists of an additional 90hours of course time and an assessment that consists of three papers and an IA. The SL course is a complete subset of the HL course, consisting of:

Number & Algebra 29 hours
Functions 42 hours
Geometry & Trigonometry 46 hours
Statistics & Probability 52 hours
Calculus 41 hours
Took Kit & Exploration 30 hours

Analysis & Approaches SL & HL

The Analysis & Approaches SL(Standard Level) class is for students who have a moderate level of math knowledge and are interested in studying math. The Analysis and Approaches SL class is also for any student who plans on pursuing a class post-high school graduation that requires math (economics, sciences, etc.).

The Analysis & Approaches HL (Higher Level) class is for students who have the strongest skills in mathematics. These students are the ones who plan to study for careers post-high school graduation that rely heavily on math (engineers, math studies, etc.).

This SL course consists of 150 hours of course time and an assessment that consists of two papers and an IA. The SL course consists of:

Functions 21 hours
Geometry & Trigonometry 25 hours
Statistics & Probability 27 hours
Calculus 28 hours
Took Kit & Exploration 30 hours

This HL course consists of an additional 90 hours of course time and an assessment that consists of three papers and an IA. The SL course is a complete subset of the HL course, consisting of:
